Darwin to Okinawa

When Obama came to Darwin last November, we heard confirmation of plans to base US marines in the Top End.

Kadena base in Okinawa

So when a couple of us were going to Japan on other business, we felt compelled to take a few extra days to visit Okinawa and learn from the locals.

Peter Watts - Uranium should stay in the ground

Arabunna man Peter Watts is the co-chair of ANFA, the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance. Formed in 1997, the Australian Nuclear Free Alliance (formerly the Alliance Against Uranium) brings together Aboriginal people and relevant NGO’s concerned about existing or proposed nuclear developments in Australia, particularly on Aboriginal homelands.

In early 2012, Mr Watts represented ANFA at the Global Conference for a Nuclear Power Free World, held in Yokohama, Japan. Peter brought a message from Australia; expressing shame that Australian uranium was implicated in the Fukushima disaster; describing the local impacts of uranium mining; and calling all nations to work together to end the nuclear industry.

Fair Dinkum Aussie from Fukushima

"G'day mate,
I'm a fair dinkum Aussie!

I was an exchange student to Brisbane a long time ago, so Australia is my second home."

Terumi Kataoka, from the Uniting Church in Aizu, with a message to her fellow Christians in Australia to unite against nuclear power.

Formerly an exchange student in Brisbane, Terumi describes how she fled the reactor disaster, then decided to return to her responsibilities to her community in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima.

Fukushima snow - hotter than Rum Jungle

I'm not sure how it came to this - I'm really outside my comfort zone.

But there was something about the invitation to visit a recent reactor disaster zone that just gripped me. After contemplating the risk of catastrophic reactor failure for so many years, now that it had happened I found myself wanting to reach out to the communities grappling with their new realities. Before I knew it, I found myself locked into a commitment to visit Fukushima.

Darwin Residents Against War

Darwin Residents Against War (DRAW)
invite past members, friends and supporters to join us for president Obama's local visit to demonstrate opposition to increased U.S. military presence in the Top End.

While our local leaders indulge in the glory of a presidential visit,
we're intent on demonstrating that local people maintain a vision for peace.
